On May 7, 1851, the Cherokee Nation established the Cherokee National Seminary for Women in Tahlequah, the same year a men’s seminary opened within its borders. This comes after it moved to Indian territory and partially built institutions to support its future.

On March 6, 1909, following statehood, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill providing for the establishment and site of Northeastern State Normal School in Talquah, Oklahoma, to train teachers. To this end, it purchased the buildings, land and equipment of the Cherokee Women’s Seminary from the Cherokee Tribal Government.

In 1921, the name was changed to Northeastern State Teachers College as it expanded to include a full four-year program. In the 1950s, Northeastern became a comprehensive state university, expanding the bachelor’s degree program to cover liberal arts subjects and adding a five-year program designed to prepare teachers for master’s degrees in elementary and secondary schools.

With the addition of graduate degree programs, in 1974 the Oklahoma Legislature authorized the change of the institution’s name from Northeastern State College to Northeastern Oklahoma State University; in 1985, it authorized the change to Northeastern State University. In 1979, NSU opened the School of Optometry, making it one of 14 schools in the United States to offer doctoral degrees in this field.

In the early 2000s, NSU was the fourth largest university in Oklahoma. On March 6, 2009, NSU celebrated its centennial with a Founders Day celebration.
