LIU was chartered by the New York State Department of Education in Brooklyn in 1926 to provide “effective and affordable education” to people “in all walks of life.” LIU Brooklyn is located in downtown Brooklyn, on the corner of Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues. The main building is adjacent to a 1920s movie theater, the Paramount Theater (now known as the Schwartz Gymnasium), which retains most of its original decorative details and a fully operational Wurlitzer organ that rises from below the basketball court floor. The campus consists of nine academic buildings; a recreation and athletic complex including a Class I regulated sports field; one on-campus and two adjacent residential buildings; and adjoining parking facilities. The campus is home to the University’s oldest school, LIU Pharmacy (Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences), which was founded in 1891 as the Brooklyn School of Pharmacy and LIU Global, a four-year bachelor’s degree program, Students are allowed to live and study in eight countries over eight semesters. LIU Brooklyn is home to the NCAA Division I Blackbirds, the George Polk Award for Excellence in Journalism, and the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts.

In 1951, in response to a growing number of families moving to the suburbs, LIU purchased a 177-acre (72-hectare) estate called Hillwood from grain heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her third husband Joseph E. Davies . Warburton Hall, the original home in the town of Brookville on Long Island’s Gold Coast, was built by William A. Prime and extensively renovated by Marjorie and her second husband, Edward F. Hutton. Three years later, the campus was renamed C. W. Post in honor of Marjorie Post’s father. In 2012, the university changed its name to all campuses. The CW Post is now the LIU Post, the university’s largest campus at 307 acres (125 hectares) with a historic 1920s mansion, gardens, sports fields, art studios and performing arts spaces, radio, television and radio, on-campus A sustainable energy facility, and the only on-campus equestrian facility on Long Island. The LIU Post is home to the NCAA Division II LIU Post Pioneers, as well as the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The school launched its first online degree program in 2004
