Lipscomb University was founded in 1891 by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding. The campus grounds mainly consist of the former estate of David Lipscomb, who donated it to the school. The school has always been designed to function as a Christian liberal arts institution. It is still affiliated with the Church of Christ and the seminary is part of the university.
Its original name was Nashville Bible School, which was later renamed David Lipscomb College and later David Lipscomb University. Lipscomb graduated from its first senior class in 1948, leaving the Junior College name forever. In 1954, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools awarded Lipscomb its first accreditation. In 1988, Lipscomb achieved Level III (granting a Master’s degree) status and was known as David Lipscomb University.
