The predecessor of today’s SRH Fernhochschule was the Kolping University of Applied Sciences, founded in 1996 by the Kolping Society. In 1998 the Teutonic Knights took over sponsorship and in 2001 sold the university to the SRH Group.

In 2005 it was accredited as Germany’s first private distance learning university, and in 2010 it was reaccredited. In June 2011, it received institutional accreditation for a maximum of ten years. The release was conditional on “the relationship between the university management and the sponsoring company must be changed in such a way that the necessary independence is guaranteed institutionally in order to achieve freedom of research and teaching”. All courses are accredited by AHPGS or ZEvA. In 2019, SRH Hochschule Heidelberg, SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences and SRH Fernhochschule – The Mobile University were audited by the Accreditation Committee and jointly obtained “System Accreditation”. In May 2020, SRH Fernhochschule was officially recognized indefinitely by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
