In 1960, the City of Newport News joined the Commonwealth of Virginia to create Christopher Newport College (CNC), which opened in 1961 in the old John W. Daniel School building. The college was established as an extension of the College of William and Mary and offers extension programs that have been in the area for some time. In 1992, the college became a university under the leadership of President Anthony R. Santoro, who oversaw the construction of the first residence hall. In 1996, CNU developed a plan to increase competitiveness. The plans include expanding university properties, several new buildings and residence halls, and overhauling the academic curriculum and admissions process.
