In February 1937, against the backdrop of the Great Depression, George Pepperdine established a liberal arts college in the city of Los Angeles, affiliated with the Church of Christ, and called—to the embarrassment of the founder— —George Pepperdine College.

Pepperdine built his fortune primarily through the Western Automobile Supply Company, which he founded in 1909 with a $5 investment, but his prosperity led him to more ambitious Caring. [He] thought it was wrong to accumulate vast wealth and use it selfishly.” Pepperdine expressed his dual goals for the college that bears his name, “First, we want to provide top-notch, fully accredited liberal arts academic training …Secondly, we are particularly committed to a larger goal—to live Christlike lives in students, to love the church, and to love the human soul.”

On September 21, 1937, 167 freshmen from 22 different states and two other countries took classes on the new 34-acre (14-hectare) campus at West 79th Street and South Vermont Avenue in the Vermont Hills neighborhood of South Los Angeles, and later Known as the Vermont Avenue Campus. The campus was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by Art Deco architect John M. Cooper. By April 5, 1938, George Pepperdine College was fully accredited by the Northwest Association, thanks in large part to the leadership of President Batsell Baxter and Dean Hugh M. Tiner.
