On March 6, 1909, the second legislature of Oklahoma approved a bill designating Durant as the seat of a normal school to provide services to the following 12 counties: Atoka, Blaine, Carter, Choctaw, Latimer, Le Flor, Love, Marshall, McCurtin, McIntosh, Pittsburgh and Pushmatha. Southeastern Oklahoma State University opened its doors to students for the first time on June 14, 1909, as the Southeastern State Normal School. The early teaching program included four-year high school and first and second grades. The first meeting of the school was held in a temporary dormitory before the completion of the Morrison Auditorium in January 1911, which has long been known as the administrative building.

The original purpose of Southeastern was to provide teacher education for public schools in Oklahoma. Two-year graduates receive a lifetime teaching certificate. In 1921, the institution became a four-year college and changed its name to Southeastern State Teachers College. The College Library (now Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library) was completed in 1928. The main function is still teacher education, and bachelor of education and bachelor of education are awarded.
