Cornell University is a private Ivy League and statutory land-grant research university headquartered in Ithaca, New York. Cornell University was founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White to teach and contribute to all fields of knowledge—from classics to science, from theory to application. These then-unconventional ideals were embodied in Cornell’s founding principles, a popular quote from founder Ezra Cornell in 1868: “I will build an institution where anyone can Guidance can be found in any study.”

The university is divided into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate departments on its main Ithaca campus, each of which defines its specific admissions standards and academic programs almost autonomously. The university also manages two satellite campuses, one in New York City and one in Qatar Education City.

Cornell University is one of the few private land-grant universities in the United States. [Note 1] Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its College of Agriculture and Human Ecology and the College of Industrial Labor Relations. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the College of Veterinary Medicine is state-supported. As a land-grant college, Cornell conducts cooperative outreach programs in every New York county and receives funding for certain educational missions annually from New York State. Cornell University’s main campus in Ithaca, New York, occupies 745 acres (more than 4,300 acres if you consider the Cornell Botanic Gardens and land owned by the many universities in New York City).
