ISU was founded as a teacher training school in 1857, the same year the first Illinois Board of Education was established, and two years later, the state legislature passed the Free Schools Act. Its backers include judge and future Supreme Court justice, David Davis and local businessman and landowner Jesse W. Fell, whose friend Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer hired by the Board of Education to draft legal documents to secure schools funds. Founded as Illinois State Normal University, its name reflects its primary mission as a normal school. Classes were originally held in downtown Bloomington, occupying space in Major Hall, formerly the home of Lincoln’s “Lost Speech.” With the completion of the Old Main in 1860, the school moved to its present campus in what was then the village of North Bloomington, which was chartered as “Ordinary” in 1865. The new town is named after the university.

In 1965, the school was renamed Illinois State University Teachers, and in 1968 it was renamed to what is now Illinois State University.
