The University of Missouri (Mizzou, MU or Missouri) is a public land-grant research university located in Columbia, Missouri. It is the largest university in Missouri and the flagship of the University of Missouri’s four-campus system. Founded in 1839, it was the first public university west of the Mississippi River. It is a member of the Association of American Universities.

With more than 30,000 students enrolled in 2020, more than 300 degree programs are offered in 13 major academic departments. Its prestigious Missouri School of Journalism, founded by Walter Williams in 1908, was the world’s first journalism school; it publishes daily newspapers, Columbia Missouri, and operates KOMU, an NBC affiliate. The University of Missouri Research Reactor Center is the most powerful university research reactor in the world and the only source of isotopes for nuclear medicine in the United States. The university operates the University of Missouri Health Care, which operates several hospitals and clinics in central Missouri.

Its NCAA Division I sports teams, known as the Missouri Bengals, compete in the Southeastern Conference. The homecoming tradition in the United States is said to have originated in Missouri.

The campus is home to the Missouri Historical Society and the Museum of Art and Archaeology. Its historic center, the Francis Quadrangle, is a National Historic District. Jesse Hall and the Missouri Theater are large performance venues used by the University of Missouri School of Music.
