It is the second largest and second oldest university in Austria, second only to the University of Vienna. The university currently has more than 30,000 students.
The university is divided into six colleges, the two largest of which are the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Natural Sciences. The other faculties are: Faculty of Law; Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences; Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences; Catholic Theological Seminary. These colleges offer a variety of undergraduate (BA, BSc), postgraduate (MA, MSc) and doctoral degree (PhD) courses, as well as special teaching degrees in their specific areas of expertise.
In 2004, in accordance with Austrian national law, the medical school was separated from the university and became an independent university, the Medical University of Graz.
The University of Graz does not have a dedicated Faculty of Engineering, but the Technical University of Graz, which focuses on engineering and technology, cooperates with the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Graz to offer inter-university undergraduate and postgraduate courses under the name “NAWI”. The main aim of the collaboration is to avoid duplication of work and infrastructure, especially in cost-intensive subjects such as chemistry, industrial chemistry, physics and earth sciences, as both universities are close to each other. Students on one of the programs will attend lectures and seminars at both universities and receive a joint degree at the end of their studies.
Due to its geographical location close to the Slovenian border as well as Ljubljana, the capital of the Republic of Slovenia, and Maribor, the second largest city, the university has traditionally attracted many students from Slovenia and provided Austrian academics, scientists and businesses with a gateway to the southeast Portal of Europe. For example, the establishment of the Department of Slovenian Language and Literature at the University of Graz laid the foundation for academic research on Slovenian culture, literature and language in so-called “Slovenian Studies”.
The school has strong teaching staff and high-quality teaching, attracting students from all over the world every year. The school’s School of Economics and Social Sciences is very famous. There have been 6 Nobel Prize winners from this school. In addition, Nikola Tesla, the famous 20th century inventor, physicist, and founder of the alternating current system, studied at Graz University of Technology. The duration of university education is generally 4 years, and graduates will be awarded a bachelor’s degree.
