The American Public University System (APUS) is a private, for-profit online learning university system comprised of American Military Universities (AMU) and American Public Universities (APU). APUS is wholly owned by American Public Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: APEI), a publicly traded private sector company. APUS has corporate and academic offices in Charlestown, West Virginia. In addition to dual degrees, certificate programs, and programs of study, APUS offers associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees.

As of March 31, 2021, APUS had approximately 110,000 alumni worldwide.

Despite its name, APUS is not a public agency and is not part of the U.S. government or the U.S. military. In 2018, the school paid Massachusetts $270,000 after the Massachusetts Attorney General investigated allegations that it misled potential students.

About 56 percent of APUS students report having served in the military when they initially enrolled. Approximately 55,000 military members receive tuition assistance from APUS schools. Another 16,702 people used their GI Bill benefits for schools.
