Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly known as Georgia Tech, or Tech in Georgia, is a public research university and polytechnic in Atlanta, Georgia. It is part of the University System of Georgia, with satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia; Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shenzhen, China; and Singapore.

The school was founded in 1885 as the Georgia Institute of Technology as part of a rebuilding program to build an industrial economy in the American South after the Civil War. Initially, it only offered degrees in mechanical engineering. By 1901, its curriculum had expanded to include electrical, civil and chemical engineering. In 1948, the school changed its name to reflect its growth from a trade school to a larger and more capable technical college and research university. Today, Georgia Tech is organized into six colleges containing approximately 31 departments/units with a focus on science and technology. It is widely recognized for its degree programs in computer science, engineering and business.

Student movements, whether organized or intramural, are part of student and alumni life. The school’s intercollegiate athletics teams, four-time soccer national champion yellow jackets and the nationally recognized battle song “Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech” helped put Georgia Tech in the national spotlight. Georgia Tech has 8 men’s and 7 women’s teams competing in the NCAA Division I track and field and football bowl games. Georgia Tech is a member of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
