Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is a public research university in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. As of the fall of 2021, the school has enrolled 7,044 undergraduates, 1,865 graduate students, and 9,009 students. The university is located 55 miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh. It is governed by the local Board of Trustees and the Pennsylvania Higher Education System’s Board of Governors. IUP has campuses in Punxsutawney, Northpointe and Monroeville. IUP is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Conceived as an Indiana Normal School, IUP was first chartered in 1871 by investors from Indiana County. The school was created under the Normal Schools Act passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on May 20, 1875. The normal schools established under the Act are private companies and in no way depend on the state treasury. They can be “public” normal schools only in the sense of official federal recognition.

The school opened in 1875 on the model of the French École Normale. It only enrolled 225 students. All normal school activities are held in a building that also houses an experimental school for demonstration teaching. Control and ownership of the agency passed to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1920. In 1927, authorized by the Pennsylvania State Legislature, it became Indiana’s State Teachers College, with the right to award degrees. As its mission expanded, it was renamed Pennsylvania Women’s College, and again in 1959 as Indiana State College. In 1965, the institution gained university status and became Indiana University of Pennsylvania, or IUP.
