On July 25, 1917, the Ball brothers, local industrialists and founders of the Ball Company, bought Indiana Teachers College from foreclosure. The Ball brothers also founded Ball Memorial Hospital and Minnetrista, and were benefactors of the KUKA Academy founded by their uncle George Harvey Ball. The Ball brothers bought the administration building and surrounding land for $35,100. In early 1918, during a brief session of the Indiana State Legislature, state legislators accepted a gift of schools and land from the Ball brothers. The state granted operational control of the Muncie campus and school buildings to administrators Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute. That same year, Marion Teachers College relocated to Muncie, adding its resources to the school officially named Indiana State Teachers School – Eastside. The original 235 students enrolled on June 17, 1918, with William W. Parsons serving as the university’s first president.

The close relationship between Balls and the school has led to the college’s unofficial moniker, with many students, staff and local politicians casually referring to the school as “Ball State,” a shorthand alternative to its longer official name. During a short session of the Indiana Legislature in 1922, the state renamed the school Ball Teachers College. This is in recognition of the Ball family’s continued endowment to the institution. In this act, the state also restructured its relationship with Terre Haute and created a separate local board for the Muncie campus. In 1924, the trustees of Ball Teachers College hired Benjamin J. Burris to be the successor to President Linnaeus Hines. The Ball brothers continued to donate to the university and in 1924 contributed to the Science Museum (now known as the Burke Hart Building) and partially financed the expansion of Ball Arena in 1925. By the 1925-1926 school year, Ball State’s enrollment was 991: 697 women and 294 men. Based on the school’s close relationship with the Ball Corporation, the school has long used the nickname “Fruit Jar Tech”.
