Maryhurst University is a private applied liberal arts and business university in Maryhurst, Oregon. It is one of the oldest university degree-granting institutions in Oregon, conferring its first degree in 1897. Maryhurst College was established as St. Mary’s College and was run for many years by the Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus and Mary. The former campus is located on the Willamette River about 9 miles south of Portland, Oregon. Although Maryhurst University is a Roman Catholic school, it serves students of all faiths and backgrounds.

The university offers bachelor’s completion programs in a variety of liberal arts and business areas, as well as graduate degrees in areas such as business and nonprofit management, food systems and society, teaching, art therapy counseling, theology and applied theology, and interdisciplinary studies. After its founding in 1893, Maryhurst became the first women’s liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest.

The university closed in late summer 2018. The main reason is the drop in enrollment, which fell from 1,409 to 743 in just four years from the fall of 2013 to the fall of 2017. In recent years, the university’s student population peaked at 2,000 during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. Before the closure, however, Maryhurst teachers challenged that claim.
