Columbia Southern University was founded in 1993 by Robert G. Mayes, Sr. The university developed its first environmental engineering and occupational safety and health degree programs in 1994. Additional degree programs were developed and offered by 1996: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, followed by Computer Science, Criminal Justice Administration, and Health Administration.
Mayes led the agency until his death in 2005, when his son, Robert Mayes, Jr., assumed the presidency. Ken Styron has served as President of Columbia Southern University since May 1, 2018.
Since 2001, Columbia Southern University has been accredited by the Distance Education Accreditation Commission (DEAC), formerly the Distance Education and Training Commission (DETC). On December 2, 2021, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Universities (SACSCOC) Board of Directors conferred CSU candidacy and authorized an accreditation committee to prepare for the final step of membership.
